San Diego Wave: Why Casey Stoney's side could be ones to watch in 2024
Ever since their first outing in 2022, San Diego Wave have been a club moving in the right direction, with positive results and a firm belief in what they are doing on the field matched by a clear growth plan off it to ensure that they build year on year, and the recent sale of the club for $150m will only allow those ambitions to grow as they look to the future.
That cohesion has been one of the driving forces behind them reaching the play-off semi-finals in both of their campaigns so far, and there is no doubt when considering how quickly they have settled into life in the NWSL that they are a side that not many look forward to playing against and that has the ability to challenge anyone who stands in their way.
Central to that has been their desire to play with efficient tactics and to create partnerships around the field, with it clear that the understanding that many of their squad now have of each other’s strengths and weaknesses has led to them becoming a more effective unit, and there is a lot of hope that 2024 could be the year when that leads to even greater success in the shape of a Championship game appearance and maybe even the trophy.
Evolving tactics
The key thing for any side who wants to challenge for silverware to get right is tactics, with that being the fundamental part of any football team, and it is safe to say that San Diego and head coach Casey Stoney have understood that well and have worked hard to ensure that ideas are kept simple and easy to understand so that players have the ability to flourish and to always be the best version of themselves.
