Real Madrid: Have they taken a step backwards this season?
Whilst Barcelona have dominated the Spanish game for many years now, the last couple of years has seen a concerted effort made by those nearest to them in Liga F to close the gap and to ensure that their reign will end at some point in the future.
One of those who has looked the most capable of challenging them of late has been Real Madrid, with them taking several steps forward on the pitch last season under new head coach Alberto Toril and attracting plenty of positive attention as a result.
However, this season has seen that improvement stall somewhat, with results and performances lacking the same consistency and the team struggling to match the standards that they had set for themselves last time out. With that in mind, the team could well be in for a big summer ahead, and it will be interesting to keep an eye on them in order to see what changes are made as they attempt to get their progression back on track.
Rebuilding the club
Before Toril’s arrival, Real Madrid’s tactics tended to revolve around a direct approach whenever they had the ball and a desire to use the wings when building phases of play, with a desire to utilise the pace of their wingers and full-backs whenever they could.
