NJ/NY Gotham: Why their rebuild under Juan Carlos Amorós should excite NWSL fans
The NWSL has always been an exciting league for fans of women’s football to watch, not only because it contains some of the best players in world football but also because there is a genuine belief that anyone can beat anyone if they play well on the day.
2023 could be one of the most interesting seasons yet, with plenty of major names joining the league, both from the annual Draft and from clubs outside the USA, and one team who have been busy in the close season is NJ/NY Gotham. Last season, they didn’t have the best of times and ended up bottom of the pile, but there is a lot of hope as the new campaign rapidly approaches that their fortunes will improve this time around, with new head coach Juan Carlos Amorós introducing fresh ideas and their recent squad additions giving them the quality that they missed in 2022.
2022 problems
It was evident to anyone watching Gotham last year that there were big issues in the team both with and without the ball, as the team lacked tactical clarity and didn’t seem to have any belief in what they were being asked to do. As a result, they became far too easy to play against and it became common for their opponents to both keep them out and break them down without having to work too hard.
