Lúcia Alves: Which WSL club might suit the Benfica player?
The 2023/2024 season will be one that Benfica remember for a very long time, with it not only seeing them add another Campeonato Nacional title to their already bulging honours list but also reach the Champions League knockout stages, where they made history as the first Portuguese side to get to that point in the European competition.
There have been many who have contributed to their success not just in the last season but in recent times, and one name that deserves to be highlighted is that of defender Lúcia Alves. Capable of playing at right or left-back, as a wing-back or further forward, she has established herself as a key cog in their machine, with her versatility allowing her to adapt between different shapes and systems and her pace proving to be the undoing of so many opposing sides.
However, this summer could see Alves’ time at the club come to an end, with her contract up and reports suggesting that she might be looking for a new challenge. Although nothing has been confirmed or denied as of yet, there are some suggesting that she could be moving to the WSL once the window does open, and it certainly seems as if her future could be worth keeping an eye on over the coming months.
Attacking qualities
With that in mind, it seems prudent to gain an idea of what Alves would bring to any side who did harbour an interest in signing her, and the first thing to mention is that playing on the front foot is very much her forte. It is for this reason that she has thrived whilst with Benfica, as their tactics when with the ball have largely revolved around having options open in forward positions and always having an ability to play up the field as they look to control the tempo of their games.
