Caroline Weir: How can Real Madrid and Scotland cover for her absence?
For all female footballers, the three letters that are dreaded the most and which they hope to never come across at the same time are A,C and L. Yet, over the last year, more and more seem to be succumbing to long-term anterior cruciate ligament injuries, which sees them out of action for the better part of a year and forced to go through slow recovery processes, during which they hope that luck is on their side with regards to how quickly they can get back onto the pitch.
In the last week, two more players have been told that their seasons have come to a premature conclusion, with Manchester United’s new signing Emma Watson picking up a problem in Scotland training and Caroline Weir being forced to come off early against Belgium, and the latter is arguably the bigger miss given the importance that she has both for them and for club side Real Madrid.
Since moving to the Spanish capital, she quickly became a fan favourite and a key part of their progression up the league, and any hopes of them continuing to close the gap between themselves and Barcelona this season were always going to depend on her being available for as many games as possible.

There is no doubting that the move to Real Madrid has changed Weir’s game for the better, with her now showing a lot more attacking freedom than she did at Manchester City.
