AS Roma: Why their transfer activity shows careful planning and a desire to build on last season
For Roma fans, 2022/2023 will be forever etched in the memory, with it being the year in which they secured their first ever Serie A title, ending Juventus’ five-year reign in the process, and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in their first appearance in the European competition.
Now though, focus has turned towards the 2023/2024 campaign, with Roma once again in the Champions League and now seen as the team to beat in the Italian top flight. As a result, they will need to keep developing the squad in order to maintain the gap that was established between them and the other teams in Serie A last season.
Transfers will be a big part of their ability to stay on top, but they do need to plan their activity carefully as it would be so easy to go overboard and to bring in more players than are actually needed. Fortunately though, it does appear as though the club are aware of the perils that disrupting their already-established structure would bring, with it clear in each new arrival so far that they know what they are looking for and how the new faces will fit into their overall team culture.
